How to Cope with Stress

Do you feel like you’re under more stress than usual? Pressure can come from many sources, whether you have too many responsibilities, are going through an emotional period, or are just in the middle of a busy season at work. In order to get a handle on things, it’s important to learn how to cope with stress and manage it like a pro! With these seven tips, you’ll be feeling calmer and happier in no time.


1) Laugh at Yourself

The first step to cope with stress is to know yourself and what your personality does in high-stress situations. Once you know the type of person you are and how your thoughts and behaviors react, you can take steps to make sure you’re taking care of yourself. Here are some helpful tips for how to cope with stress:

  • Try something new like cooking or crafting.
  • Get out of the house for an hour each day – do anything from sitting at a coffee shop, going on a walk, or even doing errands instead of sitting home alone all day long;
  • Remember that it’s okay not be perfect 100% of the time and that makes it easier when we screw up, feel embarrassed or if things don’t go exactly according to plan;
  • Talk to someone who has been through similar experiences as you. They may have suggestions or words of encouragement that help more than you know;
  • Seek out opportunities for self-care: get into a bubble bath, treat yourself to a manicure/pedicure, watch Netflix – whatever sounds good to help restore peace and balance in your life;
  • If none of these suggestions seem to work, talk with a professional who specializes in mental health so they can provide personalized strategies for how to cope with stress on a more permanent basis.


2) Get out of Your Head

Getting out of your head is one of the best ways to cope with stress. Let’s face it, you can’t control everything and sometimes it’s necessary to take a break from thinking about things that are stressing you out. Here are some helpful ways to get out of your head:

  • Take deep breaths
  • Listen to music
  • Get outside
  • Take a walk
  • Journal
  • Meditate

Luckily, there are many ways you can proactively cope with stress and maintain your physical health so that you’re able to maintain your mental health too. Here are some easy but effective strategies that can help:

  • Take a break from work. When it feels like too much, take five minutes away from whatever is stressing you out. Go outside or have a cup of tea. You’ll feel refreshed when you come back!
  • Eat well and exercise regularly. Eating healthy will not only help manage your anxiety, but will also reduce fatigue and support concentration. Exercise is a great way to stay fit but also reduces anxiety levels by increasing endorphins.   • Engage in deep breathing exercises. When faced with intense anxiety, taking deep breaths can help to calm down the nervous system and stop anxious thoughts in their tracks. Close your eyes while inhaling deeply through your nose then exhaling slowly through pursed lips as you count 5 seconds on inhalation and 10 seconds on exhalation. Deep breathing has been shown to lower anxiety levels faster than other anxiety management techniques such as listening to music, watching TV or reading a book.


4) Exercise

Exercise is one of the best ways to keep stress from getting the best of you. When you’re experiencing anxiety, your body naturally releases adrenaline and cortisol. So go for a run, do some yoga, or take your dog for an extra-long walk—whatever gets your heart racing will help release those hormones so they don’t build up. Plus, exercise can actually lower anxiety levels by releasing endorphins—those feel-good chemicals that boost your mood and make you feel relaxed. The physical act of working out can also distract you from what’s stressing you out in the first place, which helps relieve anxiety. You may not realize it, but your mind does a lot of work when you’re going through something tough; it remembers the event over and over again, as if it were happening right now. Having other things to think about can be helpful when this is happening. If nothing else, being active takes your mind off whatever’s going on in your life at that moment and puts all of its attention on your workout.


5) Take Breaks Often

Take breaks from work. In order to cope with stress, you need to practice self-care. Breaks are an important aspect of this, because they give your brain time to process what’s happening and take stock of the situation. Plus, taking periodic breaks will help reduce your overall stress levels over time. So remind yourself about all the things for which you should feel grateful–both big and small–and let those feelings bring relief instead of frustration.


6) Don’t Live to Work

You know that feeling? You’re stressed about everything you have going on, and your body just wants to shut down. Your head is throbbing, your muscles are tight, and your stomach is upset. You’re anxious, you can’t sleep, and you’re all over the place with your moods. We’ve all been there at one point or another – but it’s not just bad for our health; it’s bad for productivity too.

Stay active:

Moving around helps us release endorphins which produce feel-good chemicals such as serotonin, dopamine and oxytocin – hormones associated with happiness. So take up a sport or walk around the block every day to give yourself an opportunity to unplug from whatever is stressing you out.


7) See the Forest for the Trees

To cope with stress, take some time to reflect on what’s going on. Ask yourself these questions: What is stressing me out? Why am I stressed? Is there anything I can do about it? If so, what could I do to make the situation better? If not, how can I find someone who will help me or tell me how to fix it? What is making this difficult for me? How might things be different if they were easier for me in this area of my life? Once you’ve thought through your feelings and the situation that has caused them, take some time to do something that brings you joy. You’ll feel better in no time!



There are many ways that you can cope with stress. One way is to develop healthy habits such as eating healthy, sleeping enough, and exercising. Another way is to practice relaxation techniques such as yoga, meditation, or deep breathing. There are also coping strategies you can do when anxiety or physical symptoms become overwhelming and interfere with your life. You can have someone close to you help take care of you when this happens so that you don’t have the weight of your problems on your shoulders alone.
